O What a Night! WHC Tournament in Full Swing…

viking-background-basketballThe Western Highlands Conference (WHC) Tournament is in full swing, and the Lady Vikings appear to be peaking at just the right time.  In similar fashion to last season the Lady Vikes are hitting on all cylinders at just the right time, blowing out both of their WHC opponents in the conference tournament.  Avery’s ladies hope to continue that success into this evening where they will face the 1 seed Lady Mountaineers from Mitchell.  Last season the Lady Vikings had a tough season, but were able to overcome that and defeat Mitchell in the tournament final; and this season are looking to do the same.

Avery bounced back from their worst offensive performance of the season, 39 points at Mitchell last friday evening, to win two in convincing fashion when it counts.  They followed up Monday’s 79-41 victory over Hendersonville with a dominating performance against the Polk Lady Wolverines on Thursday evening at Avery High in the WHC tournament.  Avery jumped on the board quickly and often in the first quarter outscoring Polk 21-8 in the period, behind 6 points each from Allison Vance and Katie Ellis.  In the second quarter Katelynn Eudy would get in the mix scoring 8 of the Lady Vikings’ 23, leading the Lady Vikes to a 44-24 halftime lead.

Coming out of the half, the Lady Vikings would catch fire and again outscore the Lady Wolverines 23-16 in the period with a balanced attack as 9 Lady Vikes got on the board in the third, leading them to a 67-40 advantage going into the final stanza.  In the fourth the Lady Vikings would hold fast to their 27 point advantage, taking the victory 87-60 in the contest.  Four Lady Vikes would get into double digits with Ellis leading the way with 19 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists.  Eudy added 17 points and 10 rebounds, also adding 3 blocks on the defensive end; Vance added 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals, while adding 5 assists for the Lady Vikes; and Sara Wiseman added 14 points for the Lady Vikings.  Also getting in on the offensive side was Elyse Perry adding 3 points, but getting 5 assists; and Samantha Shook scoring 8 points and adding 4 assists.

The Lady Vikings came up big on the defensive end holding Polk’s leading scorer, Kiki Miller scoreless for the contest (Miller didn’t see action in the second half).  The Lady Wolverines would get 18 points from Toya Twitty, but it was not enough to keep the game close.  The Lady Vikings hope to continue their momentum into the Finals where they will face the Mitchell Lady Mountaineers, who barely squeeked by against the Lady Cougars of Mountain Heritage.  The Lady Vikes have lost to the Mitchell ladies twice this season, but are confident going into tonight’s contest.
